Our Turbine

We use a 5kW system with a blade diameter of 5.6 metres. It is mounted on a mast that is 15 metres (about 50 feet) high, supported by a specially designed structure of three mounting piles that takes up around 3 square metres of ground space.

We use the smaller 5kW turbines for three reasons:

  • Firstly, it’s quicker, simpler and cheaper to install several smaller units than one larger unit, which would require a crane and a concrete base.
  • Secondly, it’s easier to obtain planning permission for smaller turbines than it is for the larger units.
  • Finally, it is much simpler to connect smaller units to the distribution grid. Depending on your electricity usage and the size of your site, we install more than one wind turbine.

Each system will typically generate an average of 8 – 10,000kWh a year. If your location is very windy, this could go as high as 16,000kWh. We will not install a system on a site where the forecast annual energy production is lower than 7,200kWh per year or has a wind speed of less than 4.7 metres per second.
